Midland was a small town with a population of just under 10,000 people at the time of the murders. The serial killer targeted primarily young women and girls, leaving them dead or mutilated on the streets or inside their homes. In all, nine women were killed, and seven more were injured in the attacks.

Despite a massive effort by law enforcement officials, including several FBI profilers who visited Midland to help with the investigation, the killer was never identified and remains unidentified to this day. The case remains one of Texas' most notorious unsolved mysteries.

The 2-1/2 story wood frame house was built in 1825 by Daniel Linebery, a farmer and tavern keeper who also served as postmaster for the town. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town, and is one of the few surviving examples of a vernacular Federal style farmhouse in northern New Hampshire. The house features a gable roof with dormers, clapboard siding, a central chimney, and interior end walls finished in wooden plank lath. In addition to its historical significance, the house is also notable for its fine woodworking; it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985.
